2012 Comeback

I decided in December that I needed to get back to blogging. I wanted to do this because I enjoyed writing when I was doing it regularly. I have vowed to post at least once a week. That is my goal for the year with my blogs.
I think I have interesting things to say but even if others don’t find it interesting, it is a way to track my thoughts at the time. I am not getting any younger you know and we all know that the memory starts to fade as we get older. Well, I am not sure that is really true but it is the excuse everyone uses.
In reality, I think that as long as the mind is being used and tested on a regular basis, there is no need for the memories to start fading. Like the old saying goes…Use It or Lose It!! Blogging is one of those ways to “keep using it”.
Exercising your brain on a regular basis is as important as exercising the rest of your body. An old Chinese Proverb states “The palest ink is better than the best memory.” Is this true or does it have to be? I am not sure, but one thing I know is that I use my brain every day and so far so good.
There are several things we can do to exercise our brains and help keep ourselves sharp.

Physical exercise helps to keep our mind sharp. Walking and running are good ways to think. Many people do their best thinking when they are out for a walk or run. Strength exercises are also good for thinking. The concentration required to correctly do resistance exercises makes the brain work to remember correct form. If you are not thinking of that correct form it is a good possibility you will injure yourself from that incorrect form.

Hobbies are a good way to exercise the brain. Whether you are writing, sewing, building models, reading, building things, taking pictures, drawing/painting pictures etc., you are using your mind. Find a hobby and do it regularly and it will not only reduce stress in your life, your brain will benefit.

You are never too old to learn. I know it is an old saying but it is true. Try to learn something new every day. Whether you are learning a new language or updating your education. Whether you are learning something on the job or just reading something you didn’t know before. Just make a vow to learn something new and keep learning new things.

Treat others as you would expect them to treat you. Equally important is to treat yourself as you would expect others to treat you. Your mind will be sharper, you will be happier and your attitude will improve because of the reduced stress. This is also contagious and would be a benefit to everyone.

Do the little things with your mind. If you need to do some basic math, try using your brain rather than using a calculator. Whether you do it in your head or with a pencil and paper, the thought process of doing it by yourself will strengthen your memory. When was the last time you did basic math functions by yourself? This is one thing I do all the time.

Learn from everything you do. If you are driving somewhere, think of the best route to travel. Map it out in your mind. Cutting the lawn? What is the most efficient path to follow to do it the quickest way? Typing something? Try doing it without automatic spell check enabled. Double check your work manually first. Can’t remember or don’t know how to spell a word? Look it up in a dictionary (online or physical) and learn how to spell the word and learn the meaning of the word. If you are writing something by hand (I know, who does that anymore?) then concentrate on making it as neat as possible. The little things we do help to strengthen the brain and as a result the memory.
We all want to be healthy. Being healthy means we can live a happy life. Since everything runs through the brain, it’s a good thing to make sure that the brain is exercised and kept healthy.

Lose Weight for YOU

My first tip for losing weight and keeping it off is because you want to do it for you. Plain and simple. You need the desire to be a slimmer healthier you. What do I mean by this? Let me explain.
For many years I had been over weight. I knew it and everyone I knew also knew it. I had several people including a doctor tell me over the years that I needed to lose weight. All those years and as much as I knew it, I didn’t have the desire to lose weight. Sure, I had those half hearted attempts at weight loss. But somewhere deep down I didn’t have the want or desire to stay with it. I knew (or thought I did) the potential health problems that could occur with continuing to be over weight yet I still did nothing.
When I found out that I had diabetes I knew that my weight probably had a lot to do with it. I knew before that my weight had caused issues with high blood pressure and cholesterol but this time it was different. This time the doctor told me I had to lose weight and something inside me clicked. This time I really had the desire to lose weight.
I don’t know if the thought of diabetes was the actual trigger or it was just the time when I really wanted to change things. It might have been the combination of being scared of the diabetes (although I am not sure why the high blood pressure or cholesterol didn’t scare me) and the desire to start feeling less tired and have more energy.
I know that all those years I didn’t do it for my kids even though they suggested it. I didn’t do it for Mrs. EB who thought it might be a good thing. I didn’t do it for my doctors who had strongly suggested it. For some reason I didn’t want to do it and so the weight continued to pack on. It packed on to a point that I was almost double the weight that the BMI chart showed I should be. It packed on to the point that I was considered morbidly obese. Yet I still did nothing until that day in May 2008 when I said “I want to lose weight and get healthy and I want to do it for me”.
That day was the beginning of my life-long (or the remainder of it, although I don’t plan on going) journey to be a healthier me. 85 lbs have been shed, 10 inches have been lost from the waist line, my body fat has been cut in half, my chronic snoring has disappeared and I have the energy to do things that I used to run out of breath doing. I actually weigh now what I did when I graduated high school all those many years ago.
In the end you have to lose weight because YOU want to and YOU have the desire to do so. If it isn’t for YOU then you won’t succeed.

Secrets to a Healthier You

Over the course of the last year I have had several people ask me what my secret was to losing 85lbs in a year. Someone told me I should write a book on the subject but that is not really my style and I would really rather do a series of posts instead. There are several steps that need to be taken in order to achieve weight loss and keep it off. Between Mrs. EB and myself we have lost 150lbs and have managed to keep it off now for 6 months as we now maintain where we are.
So in no particular order these are the secrets that I found to losing weight. I might have missed some off the top of my head and I will elaborate on the ones I mention plus others that occur to me in further posts but this will at least get you thinking. If you are interested in knowing more about what I have done before my posts or want to understand the various points more fully before I elaborate on them then just leave me comment and I will try to send you an e-mail or base my next health post on that topic.

You need the “want and desire” to lose weight for yourself.

Stop eating white foods and limit the processed or fast foods

Read the food labels

Weigh everything you eat that is not in a specified serving size

Record absolutely everything you eat

Walk
-
Talk to your doctor

Weigh yourself weekly and consistently
This looks like a long list but for the most part it is something that can easily be accomplished. Once you have adopted the right mindset then it becomes second nature and part of everyday life. I hope my success will help get you inspired to become a healthier you.

Pedometer + Walking = Less Chance of Diabetes

I found this article today when I was reading and I must say that I totally agree.
When I found out that I had diabetes 18 months ago there were 2 things I purchased to help me out. One was a scale. No not a weight scale as you might think but a kitchen scale so I could keep track of everything that I put in my mouth. The second was a pedometer.
The pedometer was a valuable piece of my equipment in losing weight and controlling my sugar levels. Putting a pedometer in my pocket made me more cognizant of the amount of activity I was doing every day. While I didn’t (or still don’t) actually hit the 10,000 suggested steps every day I am aware of when I need to do some additional walking because I have had a long day sitting in the office. One thing we are told by the doctor and nutritionist when you are diagnosed with diabetes is that exercise will help to reduce the sugar level and any level of exercise is better than none. Just know how much walking you are doing in a day has helped me and the pedometer is one of the tools you can use.
The pedometer I purchased was Omron HJ-720ITC USB Pocket Pedometer and is one that can be but doesn’t need to be clipped to your waist. This one will work fine in your pocket so no one even knows you are using one. This is one simple tool that works and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a simple way to make sure you are getting some exercise, looking to help with fighting diabetes or other health issues that can be helped with exercise or even if you are just interested in how much you walk every day.

Health Update

Those of you who have followed me in the past know that 18 months ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and a cholesterol problem. For those of you who that don’t know the story you can read my archives.
I went for my 18 month check-up last month and continued to have solved the issues. My A1C started at a reading of 17.6mmol/l in May 2008 and for the third consecutive test my A1C was down to a normal reading, this time 5.6mmol/l. This is especially good because it is also first test without having taken any diabetes medicines since the last test. Hopefully I have changed my diet and solved the problem.
My blood pressure was also a concern with my initial reading being 152/113 and again for the third straight appointment my numbers were normal, this time it was 120/80.
I will find out in May if my cholesterol is still in a good range as it was last May after only 1 year of changing my diet.
The other benefit to changing my diet is my overall health. I have lost 80 pounds and have kept this off for almost a year now. I had to purchase 2 or 3 sets of clothes on the way down as I lost between 10 and 12 inches around my waist. I will admit that now I have lost the weight I feel I have more energy and I am able to move around a lot better. I also wonder why it took a health issue to make me smarten up. Better late than never I guess.
So, over the last 18 months I have done a lot of work to figure out what works and what doesn’t for me and if anyone is ever interested, I am always around to give my thoughts or share ideas on what worked for me. Some of my future posts will most definitely be on some of my ideas.
